Wearing Crop Tops in the Fall

Crop Top: Asos, similar here; Jeans: American Eagle here (I added extra distressing myself but those are the same jeans! They run big. Mine are a 00); Leather Jacket: Kaitlyn, similar here; Shoes: Love D here

Hi Pretties! Hope you all had a great weekend! I worked in the salon all day Saturday so I'm always so excited for Sunday and Monday because  I usually have them both off! Sunday was my mom's birthday so we went out to lunch and froyo to celebrate. Yesterday, of course, was National Coffee Day, which is probably one of my favorite "national" days second only to National Running Day. So Ben and I decided to go to a fun coffee shop. We went to Portola's at the OC Mix Mart, and we have NO idea how we have never been! There are a ton of cool little shops and restaurants in addition to Portola's. I highly recommend you take yourself there and explore if you haven't yet! Our next stop will probably be The Iron Press for date night!

So this summer was alllll about the crop tops. They have been everywhere. And now that fall is here,we should be switching out our high-waisted shorts for some denim or even a high-waisted maxi! Up until now, I have been a firm believer in only wearing a crop top if your belly button is covered. But as is the case in fashion, things change. And I'm all about trying new things! I was also inspired by crop top queen, Sara Lynn, to try out this new trend just like she did here. The jacket wrapped around my waist or on helps it maintain a classy feel too. I opted for my super baggy American Eagle jeans to contrast with my tighter crop top. When I got these jeans, I didn't feel like they were distressed quite enough so I added some extra distressing. (If you're wondering how to do it, just check out Pinterest for a tutorial!) What's your feeling on the look and the crop top trend as a whole?! I'd love to know what you think!

WORK IT OUT

Good morning and happy Friday! Today's post is a little different but it's a huge part of my life! And I probably wear more workout clothes than regular clothes some weeks so I wanted to share that part of me too! I started running probably when I was about 11 years old. My siblings and I were homeschooled, and when it came time to decide what we would do for P.E., running was the natural answer because my dad is a runner and would run nearly every day after work. So we all just followed suit. At first getting through a mile was tough, but as I kept doing it, it got easier, and then the distances got longer. I can honestly say I probably haven't ever gone a week without running except when I was sick since junior high. Something about the feeling running gave me really stuck. It's both soothing to the soul and exhilarating all in one. There's something victorious about thinking you can't run one more mile and then doing it anyways. You feel like you beat yourself. Like you pushed your body to its limits, and it in turn showed you it was capable of more than you thought. I love that feeling. I loved it so much that about four years ago, I signed up for my first marathon. My goal was simply to run the whole thing without walking and to finish. And I did just that. My time was 4:23. Two years later I decided to try my hand (I mean my feet :P) at another marathon and to do better. I ran the Nike Women's Marathon in San Fransisco (my favorite race to date), and shocked myself when I qualified for the Boston Marathon with a time of 3:33 (I later qualified again with a time of 3:25). Earlier this year, I had the honor of running the first Boston Marathon after the bombing, and it was an experience of a lifetime. I have run a total of four marathons, and while I don't have one on the books right now, I'm sure I will do another one in the near future!
I am also an avid CrossFitter. I started CrossFit on a whim and a groupon about 2 years ago. My friend suggested we go for the month, and I decided to do it. I only planned to go for the month and then stop because I couldn't see myself paying a monthly rate that was much higher than any gym membership I had ever had in the past. But a month into my CrossFit experience I was already seeing results. As a runner my whole life, I was fairly small, but not toned. I tried to do sit-ups and push-ups at home but never got the exact results I wanted. So I HAD to keep doing it. Within three months, my body had completely changed. And six months after I started CrossFit is when I qualified for the Boston Marathon. I attribute most of my improvement in my running times to CrossFit. The other appealing parts about CrossFit are the community and the competition. It's so fun to see friends day after day at the gym who are as passionate about fitness as you are. And to beat those friends at the WOD (workout of the day) might be even more fun. ;)

Below are a few questions I was asked via Instagram and a few extras I added in!

How do you wear your hair when you workout?

My hair in the above photos is thrown into a messy bun (with two hair ties because it's heavy!), and I had LITERALLY just finished a five mile run when I took these photos. As in I made my hubby meet me on the trail, and I was still all sweaty kind of just finished. I wanted these photos to be real snapshots of me in real life! So I generally wear my hair how it is in these photos. I also sometimes will just wrap it into a tight bun on top of my head, not super cute but it's functional. I HATE wearing a ponytail because it hits my neck and bugs me. Plus it usually gets more wet from sweat, and I'm a firm believer in minimizing how often I have to wash my hair because it's just too much work! (If you're wondering how I work out and then don't wash my hair, I literally just let it dry out and sometimes put dry shampoo in my hair, and it works just fine for me.)

What are your favorite workout clothes?

I usually wear spandex type shorts, a sports bra and a tank when I run or go to CrossFit (I also will wear looser running shorts when I go running but I don't like them for CrossFit because they make it hard to get my squat on. :P). And when it's extra hot like this day ^^^ I ditch my shirt too. :P When the weather cools down, I switch out my Spandex for my favorite black Nike running leggings!

What do you eat before a workout?

I almost always work out in the mornings. I wake up and have a piece of Ezekiel bread with all natural peanut butter (Target's Market Pantry brand is my fave and so cheap!) and a drop of honey. I also usually drink coffee before I go to. I think because my am workout routine is so consistent, I'm able to eat and run or go to CrossFit basically within minutes of eating. I know a lot of people have to plan the timing of what they eat but for me I'm able to just go right after I eat. I do occasionally work out later in the day, and I try to have at least an hour or two in between eating and working out because my other meals are usually things that are harder to digest like meat etc. And then if I'm hungry but heading to workout, I'll usually make a quick protein shake with ice, water, chocolate protein powder, half a frozen banana and a scoop of peanut butter.

What do you listen to when you workout?

What I'm listening to when I run highly depends on my mood. Probably about 75% of the time, it's either worship music or country. If I just need to refocus and put my mind on God or want to take the time on my run to pray and be with Jesus, then I'll listen to worship. I especially do this if I have had a bad day or am sad or upset about something. Soothes the soul. Plus I always run outside so nature plus Jesus plus running is the perfect combination. Then most other times, I listen to country. My hubby thinks I'm crazy for not always having rap or hip hop to get me pumped up but I can't think of anything better to get me excited about life but good ol' American country music. "Makes me wanna take a back road" and go for a run. I do occasionally listen to some good pump me up music. I love me some N'Sync or Destiny's Child Pandora. :P OH, and at CrossFit I definitely like anything to pump me up. Rap. Hip-hop. And my personal fave, Katy Perry's "Roar".

How do you motivate yourself?

One of the biggest things that motivates me to work out is something found in the Bible actually. And honestly I think it was this realization that made working out stick for me instead of being an off and on kind of thing. In the Bible it says that our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit. If I am the home and representation of the Holy Spirit, how important must it be for me to care for myself? Not only spiritually but physically as well. My body and life here on earth are a gift, and I need to do the best to take care of myself.
That being said, I still struggle just like everyone else with getting up and getting my butt out the door. Especially when it comes to running because YOU have to make YOURSELF do it. Nobody else will! But I usually just tell myself that by the time I quit arguing with myself about whether or not, I'm gonna go, I could already be done with my workout! And that kinda works. I also always try to go in the morning so that I don't think about it all day long. At CrossFit, I'm motivated by the people and the competition and the fact that if I show up for the class, I basically have to do the workout of course!

How often do you workout?

I love working out. I would usually rather be out on a run than sitting in front of a TV. So to most people, I probably workout a lot. I usually run 3-5 times a week and then go to CrossFit 3-4 times a week. Yes, I will do both in the same day. I am very blessed to have such a flexible schedule that allows for more time for things I love (like working out and blogging!).

If you have any questions, comment below or email me! I would love to hear from you. I know this all may sound like I'm a crazy person, but honestly it's just something I love that I have made a part of my daily life. I don't make a huge deal about it. I just do it. And that's what it takes. Just doing it. So get out and JUST DO IT. (*No, I am not being sponsored by Nike to say that but I really wish I was. :P)

P.S. I use the MapMyRun app on my phone for all of my runs! It records your pace and distance and saves all of your runs so you can look back at them if you need!

Top Knots, Trees, and End of Summer Camping

This past weekend we went up to Lake Arrowhead with a few of our best friends and went camping! My hubby and I didn't start vacationing together until after we got married so we haven't done a ton of trips together yet besides our honeymoon. And we have been wanting to go camping with this group of friends for a long time, and it finally worked out! If you live in the area and want a good spot to go to camping, you definitely should check out North Shore Campground in Lake Arrowhead! We loved it and will definitely be back. (Warning: This is like for real camping, like no showers for real kind of camping :P But that's what going in the water is for. One of my friends even brought soap and bathed in the water. :P)

We planned to leave to go camping on Friday but my hubby ended up getting called in to work so we couldn't go until early Saturday morning. So I took my time packing and took photos of my clothes while I packed. That's normal, right? The wood my clothes are on is actually pallet wood we are going to be using for framing a few things around our house. But I told my hubby I probably need to keep some of it for my flatlays. DUH.

I figured what better thing to wear camping than a big loose tee and some cut-offs. But I realized my tees just weren't quite BIG enough for my taste. (I used to think baggy tees were bad because well let's just say they don't really show off what you got. #realtalk But now I really really really love them.) Anyways, I decided to raid my hubby's closet and found this perfect tee from Asos that I paired with my cut-offs. Also, how cute is this Starbucks mug?! I'm gonna cry if it ever breaks. It was part of a series of ceramic cups they did that featured different artists! This one is by Charlotte Ronson.

Right when we got there, we headed out to go here to Aztec Falls. The hike was a little crazy getting down but it was so beautiful and so worth it! We just sat on the sand and had lunch and drinks and jumped off the rocks into the water!

This is one of my BFFs Gemma. She actually just started a blog of her own, Following Arrows. She's so cute and just shares about her new life with her hubby and things she's passionate about along with some fashion stuff. And maybe one day, you'll get lucky and she'll do a YouTube tutorial or video, and you can hear her awesome accent. She's originally from the UK!

This is my fave summer swim purchase. (I actually found the top HERE and it's only $6.99!!!) Anyone else LOVE watermelon on a hot summer day? You wanna know what else I used to use a watermelon for? If you throw a whole watermelon in the pool, it floats! So sometimes I would just jump off of the diving board with it. But my friends and I would also play a game with it where there would be two teams and you would have to see who could get the watermelon to the other side of the pool first! (oh annnnd it was coated in oil. :P)

So I found my new hobby. Running on water! Hahaha. It was so fun jumping off the rocks! The spot we jumped from is where you see that guy standing (that's Ben! I went first like a good wifey!)

We went into Lake Arrowhead village and got ice cream! Who else loves Chocolate Malted Crunch? One of mah faves.

With my ride or die roomies (we lived together for 5 years!), Heather and Gemma. Doing one of two things we do best, eating ice cream. (The other is drinking coffee, of course!)

Tent cuddles with my bae. He loves selfies.

Matching in plaid calls for a lovey dovey photo.

The first photo is posed. The second is what it's like in real life. #plaidbesties (Sidenote: seriously so happy that all of our men get along. Not sure what we would have done if they didn't!)

Wore my hair in a top knot all weekend, of course. And I added some braids the second day to change it up.

Showing his love for selfies again.

The second day, we came here to Deep Creek. It was a little less crowded and so peaceful to just sit and chat with two of my besties.

The weekend was so perfect. It was peaceful and relaxing and so nice to spend some times with our friends. I also LOVE being out in nature. To me, nothing speaks louder to me that there is a God than nature. And I love to just sit and marvel at His creation. So go get out in nature. Whether that means camping for the weekend with your best friends or simply just taking a hike or going for a walk. I promise it will be good for your soul.

Lace Duster

I try to include some of these kind of photos every so often so you know I don't take this modeling business too seriously. :P This ^^^ comes much more naturally to me than all those serious faces.

Lace Duster: Marshall's, almost exact here (they have it in wine and black too!), also love these here and here; Top: TJ Maxx, similar here; Shorts: Old Navy, similar here; Boots: Target; similar here and here

Happy first day of Fall from ever sunny Southern California! I'm still waiting on that bite in the air to tell me it's fall which also means I'm still wearing my summer clothes! It's good to find a piece that can add a touch of the new season to your outfit but that is still light and wearable in the heat. This lace duster does just that! I love the dimension it adds when wearing it with a shorter piece. Also if you still haven't tried the half top knot you should. Even if you feel a little weird, I promise you it looks good! I used to stare at myself and think it looked weird but then I saw it in photos and realized it doesn't! For this one I pulled my hair into a half pony and then braided it and pinned it into a bun!

If you didn't see already on Instagram, we went camping over the weekend, and it couldn't have been more perfect. We went with two of my best friends (and former roomies) and their men and a few other people! It was so nice to get away in nature and sit around the campfire and be with friends. I have been up to Lake Arrowhead lots of times but never camped there, and it was so much fun. My friend knew of all of these fun spots to go to there with water and rocks to jump off of. So much fun. I should have a fun little post up later this week with some photos from our weekend.

I'm off for a run and then a massage! Ahhhhh. I can't wait. I haven't had one in so long because I always hate spending the money but my shoulder has been tight and bothering me so my hubby told me I HAVE to go. Ain't gonna say no to that.

Thanks for reading!

xoxox,
Christine
